In the metal processing industry – such as cold rolling, galvanising and heat treatment – the corresponding process emissions are lower compared to the upstream processes of primary and secondary metallurgy, but they are not negligible. Responsible management of CO₂ emissions from processes and the exploitation of available technologies to reduce these have the highest priority in view of the framework conditions of the global climate targets and the European Green Deal. Achieving the climate targets in the steel processing industry requires a step-by-step plan for the subsitution and ultimately complete avoidance of fossil energy sources. The potentials for reducing direct, site-related emissions (Scope 1) and indirect emissions (Scope 2) will be highlighted in this presentation.
