About Us
Our History
The Austrian Tribology Society (German: “Österreichische Tribologische Gesellschaft, ÖTG), founded in 1976, is a working group dedicated to friction, wear and lubrication technology. The members of this scientific society include both domestic and foreign manufacturing companies, as well as research institutes.
The ÖTG serves as a facilitator between industry and R&D (research and development) occurring at both university institutions and independent institutes. The main concern is the advancement of all aspects of tribology – the science of friction and wear – including their practical application in the areas of maintenance and quality control. We are especially concerned with finding practical solutions – in a scientific and economic sense – to problems arising from friction and wear resulting from components being in relative motion to each other.
Tribological Societies, which are connected in a parent organisation “International Tribology Council (ITC)”, exist in all important countries in Europe (as well as world-wide). In Austria, the ÖTG deals with public relations concerning friction and wear, takes the initiative regarding continuing education and provides concrete guidance to engineers.
The ÖTG is the founding organisation and the owner with the largest share of AC2T research GmBH, the Austrian Center of Competence for Tribology in Wiener Neustadt. The center of competence is one of only five COMET-K2-Centres, which are institutions carrying out application-oriented basic research.

Our Goals
Organisation of conferences and seminars on industrial tribology, such as the annual symposia, international expert conferences and the “Tribo-Forum” (multiple meetings per year for interested people in industry).
Public relations efforts that raise awareness in industry (and public institutions) towards applying “tribotechnology” (preventative measures, targeted material selection, surface technologies, lubricant selection, maintenance,..) together with friction and wear.
Supporting teaching and (further) education, as well as scientific communication, in tribology; integrating tribology at universities and universities of applied sciences (German: “Fachhochschulen”), such as the area of concentration “surface technology and tribology” in the master programme “mechatronics” at the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt) in order to train “real” tribologists.
- Helping to solve tribological problems in industry by providing initial consultations
- Consulting with experts
- Consulting our daughter organisation, AC2T research GmbH – Excellence Center for Tribology
